Colorado hosted the USA Pro Cycling Challenge last week and photographing the finish line on day 7 in downtown Denver was thrilling! There were hundreds of cheering fans, lots of sponsors, activities, tents, freebies, music, noise and excitement! To be honest, I had never seen or attended a cycling event, much less, photographed one, so it was quite the experience! I still can’t believe they were going around 60 MPH! That’s more than my first car could do, and that was going downhill!
Here are a few of my favorite images:
Congratulations to BMC Racing Team’s Tejay van Garderen for breaking the course record and winning the USA Pro Challenge individual time trial! Here are some images of the finish and of Tejay van Garderen with Tom Danielson (second place) and Serghei Tvetcov (third) on the podium:
For any curious photographers that might stumble across the blog, I photographed the sharp images at 1/1000 or 1/1250 shutter speed, and for the panning shots used 1/20th of a second shutter speed. At 60 mph and shadows in one direction and the sun in the other it was very much trial and error!
Hope I get the chance to photograph another race like this sometime, it sure was fun! Thanks to Danielle from Workshop Events for hiring me!
