Dating back nearly a thousand years, this captivating walled city lies at the foot of the Atlas Mountains in Northwest Africa. I’m so lucky to return for the second time to this incredible place! I especially love wandering Marrakesh’s medina, the mazelike medieval quarter, the Djemaa el-Fna square and souks (marketplaces) selling mostly handmade goods. The colors are so vibrant, the lamps are magical and I was entertained by the happy juice vendors for nearly an hour:

Located in the heart of the city, I was lucky enough to stay at the GORGEOUS La Mamounia. The luxury palace is set on a former royal estate dating back to the 12th century!

One of the most enjoyable places to photograph has got to be the Majorelle Garden at the Yves Saint Laurent Museum. The Majorelle blue color is extraordinary!

The group enjoyed a wonderful trip to the Selman Marrakech palace and stables for a delightful meal and were treated to an exhibition featuring purebred Arabian horses.

Certainly a highlight, both photographically and personally, was a sunrise hot-air balloon ride!!

Just beyond the vibrant streets of Marrakech, the Atlas Mountains rise dramatically, offering a striking contrast to the city’s desert surroundings. The High Atlas, the section closest to Marrakech, is known for its snowcapped peaks in winter, cool mountain air in summer, and traditional Berber villages that preserve centuries-old ways of life.

Mimicking the elements found in the Djemaa el-Fna square in Marrakesh’s medina, we had the most delightful evening under the stars in the Atlas Mountains!

When I return, I will bring several empty suitcases to bring back handmade lamps, leather goods, furniture and shop until the credit card is declined! Morocco is such a great place!
